It also emphasises the need for a taught history that tells the truth about UK roll in the transatlantic slavetrade and the impact of colonization, and how both of these still have influence and impact in our world today. As part of the 100 Great Black Britons campaign, children and young people have been encouraged to explore Black British history and celebrate the continued legacy and achievements of Black people in Britain. After the ‘Windrush Generation’ scandal, The killing of George Floyd and the general increase in campaigning by the Black Lives Matter movement I decided it was high time I learned more. Following the original poll, 100 Great Black Britons was re-launched in 2020 in an updated version based on public voting, together with a book of the same title. We are delighted that 100 Great Black Britons is coming back to remind the nation of our homegrown heroes .

She received her PhD in History from the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, University of Hull in 2014.

While the book (and list) includes some of the most inspirational (and sadly not very well-known) black people from British history, there are some rather questionable entries.

Yet Africans have been present in Britain since Roman times and there has been a constant Black presence in Britain since the sixteenth century. Coming from a tradition of Jamaican and West African "doctresses", Seacole used herbal remedies to nurse soldiers back to health. Frustrated by the widespread and continuing exclusion of the Black British community from the mainstream popular conception of 'Britishness' - despite Black people having lived in Britain for over a thousand years - Vernon set up a public poll in which anyone could vote for the Black Briton they most admired.All but one will be presented as 'blended events'- meaning they will take place in our lecture hall in front of a live audience, while at the same time being streamed to those joining us online.
